PERIODICAL MAINTENANCE

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PERIODICAL MAINTENANCE

Periodical maintenance is the betterment of your garden, indoors plants, terrace, winter garden etc. in regular intervals.

Generally, such problems as the garden’s not looking as beautiful as it used to be, the plants’ becoming lifeless and not blooming as they used to be, the grass land’s turning bald and yellow and a loss of aesthetics reveal the need for a periodical maintenance.

Periodical maintenance consists of one-to-one handling of your plants, detection and removal of problems, making the necessary changes. When these procedures are carried out regularly in monthly intervals, it will not be difficult to realize the unbelievable structuring, volume and the extraordinary beauty in the plants and the grass area.

The works to be carried out within the context of periodical maintenance can be listed as follows:

Pruning :

Pruning is the essential procedure to be carried out to insure healthy growth period in plants. Spring and fall terms should be devoted to pruning the plants, so that the plant can bud and have a plumper appearance. Since the length of the pruning period and the amount of pruning to be applied differs from plant to plant, we recommend that pruning be carried out by experts.

Fertilizing :

Fertilizing is the process of making the plant recover its vigor by fertilizing the plants and the grass, thus providing them with the nutritional elements they need through chemical or organical means. While the same fertilizer selection can be made for many plants, special fertilizer selection should be done for some plants like needled plants, wild roses and boxwood. Fertilization of the grass land being an area of expertise in itself, it requires much more meticulous work. Especially during the spring months, the failure to fertilize land every 15 days shall lead to paling at the top of the grass covering. Therefore, fertilization is an important step of the periodical maintenance of both plants and the grass area.

Applying pesticides:

Applying pesticides is a procedure carried out periodically to protect the plants against pests. The content of the pesticide used varies depending on the type of plant. For example, fungucides and insecticides should be applied together against infestation and fungus blight seen in cherry laurel, whereas insecticide alone shall suffice for fruit trees. As is the case with plants, grass lands also differ in the way insecticides and diseases are treated. Herbicide compounds  are used in the fight against wild grass; whereas fungus are treated with fungucide compounds.

Airing : Airing the roots of the plants with the help of tools like mattock in specific intervals is important in terms of the vigor and health of the plant. The airing process shall ideally be followed by the fertilizing process. Airing is important for grass areas, too. Airing done with a rake shall be generally performed in spring and fall. Raking procedures other than those done during spring and fall are aimed at removing the remnants of lawn mowing and this procedure causes paling of the grass.

Mowing the lawn : Mowing the lawn consists of mowing the lawn every 15 days in spring, once a week during the summer term and carrying out short mowing in fall to prepare the lawn for winter. The lawn should be trimmed 1/3 of its length. Trimming  long grown grass all at once creates a shocking effect on the grass. Therefore, special care should be taken in when, how often and how the trimming procedure should take place.
